Total Saints Podcast (TSP) was founded in the summer of 2017 by Ben Stanfield. Our aim at that time was pretty simple – to bring together a community of global Southampton fans who wanted to hear opinion, share memories and connect with each other.
While the early period was pretty tough – with a team struggling to win many Premier League football games, a manager called Mauricio Pellegrino and a tiresome transfer saga involving a certain Dutch Centre Back – we remained committed to delivering on that aim.
And it worked…
Fans across the planet, from Nepal to Brazil and Canada to New Zealand, started listening to our weekly ramblings, dissected the analysis, followed our social channels and actively conversed with one another. We had lift off!
Through a constant level-headed approach, the new community began to realise it was a podcast which made them feel at home; that its cathartic nature would help them get through each and every week; that suffering the emotional rollercoaster of supporting Saints on their own was no longer the only option.
Obviously Mauricio didn’t last long. Nor did Virgil. But TSP did – and it was growing rapidly.
Steve Grant and Glen de la Cour added a subtle blend of experience and nous to the TSP panel, improved production skills meant we could create material that didn’t sound like it was being recorded in a cave, and the Saints team also started trending in an upward direction, thanks largely to a giant-hearted Austrian chap called Ralph!
The podcast was thriving. The content was slick. The community was growing. And Saints were excelling.
From that moment onwards, TSP would never look back…
Ben has since stepped back, with Steve and Glen joined every week by presenter Martin Starke whose presenting talent knits the whole show together and the Echo’s Saints reporter Alfie House to provide the boots-on-the-ground insight, while producer Alex Graham continues to make us all sound a million dollars.
While the early years saw a Monday morning audio-only release and nothing else, these days we are broadcasting live on multiple platforms including YouTube, where we have amassed more than 20,000 subscribers, and our Patrons on Patreon and YouTube allow us to keep expanding our offering. As well as YouTube, we also broadcast live on X and Twitch, and we’re hoping Bluesky start offering streaming videos sometime soon!
This growth has seen us nominated and shortlisted for an award at the Football Content Awards, so we set off suited and booted to Anfield for the night. We came home empty-handed, but it felt like the moment where we realised we had something special.
We even now have our own beer, thanks to our partnership with Steam Town Brew Co in Eastleigh, so why not try Total Saints Pilsner, either in person at various outlets locally, or with an online order via the Steam Town website.
